Personal Essay
Simmons University, Boston
This is a written personal statement about why I opted for a BA Political Science program at the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at Simmons University.
I Do Exist
I am a citizen of India who has never left the country for any purpose. During my school days, my country was in turmoil with rallies, protests, and riots. I was a high school student then. I can read and write English and can very well understand the heated debates, ongoing volatile clashes, and the influx of information. Their influence crept into me for a long time. It was 2019 and India faced a national political halt for the CAA protests. The CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) is an amendment act that stemmed from the ongoing debate and declaration of the NRC (National Registrar of Citizenship) in a peripheral state. The nation was divided on TV, on social media, and on the streets too. Slogans were written on the walls, and no one cared about the margins of the wall; what was already written beneath there with lime. People learned new terminologies and internalized new ideas of who is an indigenous citizen of India and who is a refugee. The universities faced surveillance for potential reasons declaring that they are left or far left. Eventually, a smoke of suspicion was burning in the public consciousness.
I had to be very careful with what I said and how I conversed on the streets. We saw a fast change. It might be because I was young or perhaps the ideological information was too headstrong for me. Somehow we made it through the time riding the same rickshaws pulled by men, eating at the roadside with minimal rupees, and waiting for festival days recollecting old memories. We tried to celebrate during the recession.
By 12th standard, I understood there is always a larger design at play; not mudslinging or a blame game that we "witness". The old world dead political ideas were taught briefly and CGPAs were allotted in the exam. We scored and left the subject matter then and there.
It became part of my instinct to see things differently and to understand the underlying circumstances that of course, are political. I was asked not to get too political. Somehow the definition of ‘political’ is more clear now. What I saw during the protests then the clashes of ideas of races, ethnicities, genders, and citizenships, and finally, it boiled down to a question: what is my bargaining with the state as an individual? When phrases like ‘identity erasure’, and ‘self-decolonization’ are highly a thing now, then why are we endlessly pushing ourselves into an axis of words and terminologies?
Questions remained. The CAA protest event was beautifully broadcasted with its fair share of identity politics. I saw minorities taking part and also mislead.
Women, tribal, and transgender who thought they wouldn’t be part of the NRC protested for the CAA with a concern looming over them.
I saw a different side of India that is not mainstream, not filtered, or media-friendly. I tried to comprehend the ongoing situations and the ways it seeps into every identity and narrative. I had no tools.
I decided to study political science. I want to pursue study for knowledge and to understand narrative politics and the underlying currents.
As I can see the world now with a more experienced eye, what is happening in my country has variation in different countries. I realized the value of understanding and disseminating politics more than ever. It was necessary that the human beings who do not look like the most, nor have the resources have the full civil liberty and freedom, rights, and duties to sustain themselves and to create a future.
Eventually, I selected Pace University and applied. Here, I can study extensively in a research-inclined program. Philosophically, it might seem like Buddha in exile! But I must say, in my case, it is a forward journey to understand society. The NRC and CAA events shaped my high school and intermediate years. I now look forward to understanding refugee politics, the idea of citizenship, and the axis that determines it. After completion of the program, I see myself in research.
The end.
