Charles University was established in 1348. In these 670 years the university has undergone a number of changes for providing better education and guidance to students. It is the most popular publicly-funded university in the country which has a total of seventeen faculties, in which three are theological, five are medical, six are faculties of the humanities and social sciences. Campus Life
The faculties of Charles University are located in Hradec Králové, Plzeň, Prague and Brandýs nad Labem. All the 17 faculties of the university have their own student accommodation and refectories. The Institute for Preparatory and Language Studies has teaching centres in Mariánské Lázně, Poděbrady, Dobruška and Zahrádky. Sports facilities and and training centres of the university are situated in Plavsko, Albeř, Horní Poříčí, Pec pod Sněžkou, Dobronice, Špindlerův Mlýn, Malá Úpa and in the Hostivař and Troja districts of Prague. It also has teaching and research centers in Rejvíz, Velemín, Mělník, Tchořovice and Horusice. The university archive and depository are situated in Lešetice.
The campuses of the university houses the Catholic Theological Faculty, Protestant Theological Faculty, Hussite Theological Faculty, Faculty of Law, First Faculty of Medicine, Second Faculty of Medicine, Third Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy,Faculty of Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Physical Education and Faculty of Humanities.
The university has around 200 buildings in Prague and outside the city, it has nearly 136 holiday chalets and 632 tracts of land that covers the area of 100 hectares.Charles University utilizes various teaching and research facilities that leases from cooperating host institutions including the Královské Vinohrady University Hospital, the General University Hospital, the Archbishopric of Prague and the Motol University Hospital.
Hostel and Facilities
The Charles University offers accommodation at Halls of Residence or dormitories for its local and international students. Students have to submit an application for a place in CU halls of residence at Erasmus online registration. Students are housed in double rooms at Charles university. Single rooms are generally not available for the first year students. 4 residences of the university are located in Prague, 1 in Pilsen and 1 in Hradec Králové.
The accommodation units at Charles university consist of twin rooms that are double rooms with two separate beds along with sharing bathroom facilities.
The Hostivař dormitory offers double rooms and has its own bathroom facilities for students.
The Troja and Bolevecká dormitory provides bathroom facilities that are shared between two double rooms.
The Hvězda, Větrník and Na Kotli dormitories provide bathroom facilities with shared among more rooms.
A small kitchenette is also available for students at the end of each corridor (Větrník, Hostivař, Hvězda). While at Trója students have to share the kitchenette between two rooms.
At Charles university students can use lavatory and hanging rooms in the hostel building. Bedding and bed linen are offered at all residential halls, towels and kitchen utensils such as pans, plates, cups are also provided to students.
