Overview

The University of Basel was established on 4 April 1460, it is Switzerland’s earliest university and one of the world’s earliest surviving universities. The university is commonly ranked among the leading institutions of higher learning in the country. The related Basel University Library is the biggest and among the most important libraries in Switzerland. The University of Basel was established in relation with the Council of Basel. It was during the years the catholic clergy resided in Basel, a provisional university was founded between the years 1432 under 1448. In May 1432 it was approved for Simon de Valla from Venice to lecture on canon law, in 1434 Jacques d'Artigny from France and was also allowed to lecture on canon law in Basel. The University offers more than 50 undergraduates, 20 diplomas, and more than 100 postgraduate programs. The University also offers around 80 doctorate programs. There are seven potential universities at the University of Basel with above 13,000 students and above 350 lecturers. 1 January 1996, the University of Basel enhanced self-sufficiency from the cantonal administration and hence received its moral to self-government. In 2007, the Cantonal of Basel Landschaft voted in approval to share the sponsorship of the university in parity with the Canton Basel-Stadt.
