Overview

The University of Lausanne was established in 1537 as a school of protestant philosophy. In 1890 that school was converted as a university. The university was the second earliest university in Switzerland. In the 17th century, the organization matured as the Institute of Lausanne. In 1741, it had 150 students and 7 lecturers. Starting in 1837, the institute was developed by the dominance of the canton of Vaud, becoming a worldly institution divided into three domains (letter and sciences, theology, and law). It continued to develop throughout the second half of the 19th century, before 1890, with the formulation of a medicine program, the institute obtained the name and status of a university. In 2003, two new potential schools were established, concentrating on the life and human sciences: the faculty of Biology and Medicine and the faculty of Geosciences and conditions. The university has a powerful international magnitude with more than 130 educational partners internationally. The university has close ties with business and program, institutions, and public dominance in Switzerland and globally. It provides “refresher courses” and complementary programs planned for adults who are already professionally active but wish to update their knowledge in a particular domain or expand their knowledge.
