The University of Florida as we know it today can be traced back to 1853 when the East Florida Seminary was established in Ocala, Florida. This was the oldest of the four institutions that eventually merged to form the modern university. The East Florida Seminary was the first state-supported higher education institution in Florida and operated until 1861 when the American Civil War began. After the war, in 1866, the East Florida Seminary reopened in Gainesville, taking over the former grounds of the Gainesville Academy, a small private college that had also closed during the war. The University of Florida is the main university in the state and it consists of 16 different colleges. UF has over 150 research centers, service centers, education centers, bureaus, and institutes. These institutions provide a wide range of academic opportunities, including over 100 undergraduate majors and 200 graduate degrees. The University of Florida has a special program called the Honors Program. Once students are accepted to the university, they can apply separately to the Honors Program. To be accepted, they need to have achieved significant academic success. The program offers more than 100 courses exclusively for its students. In 2011, there were 1900 applicants competing for 700 available spots in the program. The Honors Program also provides housing for freshmen in the Honors Residential College at Hume Hall. Additionally, the program offers special scholarships, internships, research opportunities, and study abroad opportunities.
