The University of Washington, also known as UW or Washington, is a public research university located in Seattle, Washington. It was established in 1861, making it one of the oldest universities on the West Coast, just a decade after the founding of Seattle. The university's main campus spans 703 acres in the University District of the city. Additionally, it has satellite campuses in Tacoma and Bothell. In total, UW has more than 500 buildings and over 20 million square feet of space, including a vast library system with 26 university libraries, as well as art centers, museums, laboratories, lecture halls, and stadiums. Washington is considered the leading institution among the six public universities in the state. It is renowned for its medical, engineering, and scientific research. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities. In 2018, UW invested $1.41 billion in research and development, ranking it fifth in the nation according to the National Science Foundation. UW's athletic teams, known as the Huskies, compete in the Pac-12 Conference of the NCAA Division I. They represent the United States in the Olympic Games and other international competitions. The University of Washington, with a total enrollment of 47,571 students as of Autumn 2019, is the largest university on the West Coast in terms of student population, even though it has a selective admissions process. Additionally, it is known for having one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States, with over 50% of its undergraduate students identifying as part of minority groups.

The University of Washington has been a center for education, creativity, and community engagement since it was established in 1861. With a strong commitment to making a positive impact, our students, faculty, and staff fearlessly tackle important issues and find innovative solutions. Their efforts have a significant influence not only in Washington state but also globally. The University of Washington has campuses in Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma, and also includes a top-notch medical center that serves the state and the surrounding area. Every year, over 60,000 students are motivated to learn from highly respected professionals in various fields. Being recognized as a cost-effective option among public universities, our aim is to make higher education available to everyone. The university provides undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees through its 140 departments, which are grouped into different colleges and schools. Additionally, it has a Transition School and Early Entrance Program on campus, which started in 1977.
