Brown University is a prestigious private research university located in Providence, Rhode Island. It was established in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, making it the seventh-oldest higher education institution in the United States. Brown University is one of the nine colonial colleges that were chartered before the American Revolution. What sets it apart is that it was the first college in the country to ensure equal admission and instruction for students, regardless of their religious beliefs. The university is known for its distinguished academic programs. It is home to the oldest applied mathematics program in the United States, the oldest engineering program within the Ivy League, and the third-oldest medical program in New England. Brown University was also among the first U.S. institutions to offer doctoral degrees in the late 19th century, expanding its offerings to include master's and doctoral studies in 1887. In 1969, Brown University implemented its Open Curriculum, a unique educational approach that was the result of student advocacy. This curriculum eliminated mandatory distribution requirements for general education and allowed students to design their own course of study. Under this system, students can choose to take any course and receive a grade of satisfactory or no-credit, which is not recorded on external transcripts. Additionally, in 1971, Brown University fully merged with Pembroke College, its coordinate women's institution.
