Number of applications for early admission to Harvard decreased by 17%, marking the lowest figure in four years

The number of students who applied to Harvard University through the university's early action program, which allows for admissions decisions in December rather than March, decreased by approximately 17%, according to the university's recent statement.

The deadline for the early phase of the college admissions cycle was November 1, during which Harvard faced several weeks of turmoil due to the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Additionally, this deadline came just over four months after the Supreme Court ruled against race-conscious admissions programs in a case involving Harvard University.

Harvard's official publication, The Harvard Gazette, announced that 7,921 individuals applied through the early action protocol this year, compared to 9,553 applicants in the previous year. However, this still represents an increase in early interest compared to a few years ago when the university received 6,424 early action applications in 2019.

The university did not offer any speculation about the reason for the decline in applications in its Gazette announcement. However, Harvard officials have privately expressed curiosity about the impact of the Supreme Court's decision on application numbers.

Applicants began receiving early action decisions from Harvard on Thursday night.

Yale, on the other hand, reported a slight increase in early action applications, rising from 7,744 last year to 7,856 this year. Yale's acceptance rate decreased by a full percentage point to 9.02%, while Harvard's acceptance rate increased by more than a full percentage point to 8.74%. Princeton, the only other Ivy League university with a non binding early College admissions system, has not yet released data for its anticipated Class of 2028.

Unlike the previous year, Harvard did not disclose the racial demographics of the early admitted students. However, the university did report that the majority of these students were from New England (22.3%) and that the percentage of international students increased from approximately 14% to nearly 17% compared to the previous year.
